Our Story

At the heart of our community since the 1700s!

With origins tracing back to the late 1700s, our pub has undergone numerous transformations. It commenced as an ancient coaching house along the historic Roman road leading to London, serving as a vital stop for many coachmen.

Moving Forward…

In the June of 1939, amid local fires and preparations for World War II, a decision was made to repurpose the long-unused barn behind the pub, which had once housed coaching horses, into the Sutton Scotney village Fire Station as part of the national force. This structure served as a fire station, catering to the local community and its environs until the mid-1970s when the current station was constructed adjacent to it. This unique thatched fire station, the only one of its kind in the country, has since been transformed into our three welcoming guest rooms.

Where We Stand Today…

In April 2022, David, a former estate agent, and his partner Brenda assumed ownership of the pub, taking on the roles of the new Landlord and Landlady of the Coach and Horses.
